Plastic sealant film is a controversial subject with oboists. Without prejudice, here are some advantages and disadvantages: it will help prevent air leaks, but will also somewhat reduce the vibrating capacity of your read.
If you apply it cleverly, however, it will help maintain good reed aperture and prevent the two blades from crossing.
Note : Do not wrap the film beyond 0.7 – 0.8 above the top of the thread. The biggest problem with plastic film is that it keeps moisture in and does not allow the reed to dry out properly, especially with a new reed. We therefore advise that you remove it after playing, and re-apply after the reed has dried out.
