The cutting block is an essential tool for oboists who prefer to cut off their reed-tips by hand using a scalpel. There are two sizes available – one for oboe reeds, and one for oboe d’amore or Cor anglais reeds.

Cor Anglais bocals (crooks)

Le Roseau Chantant has a large selection of Cor anglais bocals. It is an important personal choice to find the right match between instrument and bocal. Each detail in manufacture (characteristics of the bore, thickness, curvature, and quality of metal or plating used) affects response, intonation, sound quality, and projection. Neck straps and slings are useful for all oboists who regularly play Cor anglais, or who have problems with fatigue or tendonitis. We are pleased to offer the new Weightless Winds and BG-France slings, which have earned a reputation for effectiveness and durability.

Oboe and Cor anglais reed tip cutters

We offer two types of reed tip cutter: the clipper, for cutting the tips of unfinished reeds, and the guillotine, which provides a very fine cut as the finishing touch for scraped reeds.

The practical Ando clippers are easy to use and available at a very affordable price. They can be used instead of a flat plaque, to open the reed before scraping. The Reeds’n Stuff and Rieger guillotines are superb tools valued for their precision and durability.

Sealants for oboe, oboe d’amore and Cor anglais Reeds

We offer sheets of goldbeater’s skin or plastic film, to ensure a perfect air seal for your reeds. Goldbeater’s skin reduces air leakage, increasing the efficiency of the vibration of your reed. Plastic film prevents air leakage and provides additional support to stabilize the reed and help prevent the blades from crossing.

We are the proud distributors of a wide selection of instrument cases for oboe, oboe d’amore, and Cor anglais. We offer various brands, including Markus Bonna (MB) and BAM, as well as the classic style Lorée and Mönnig cases. We also feature the ultra thin and lightweight MB and BAM ‘Trekking’ cases.

Reed wire and tying-on threads

In addition to two gauges of wire for reed aperture control, we offer our customers the popular French La Soie nylon threads in several colours, and the finer gauge Gutermann nylon thread for greater precision and control when tying on.

Oils and lubricants for musical instruments

We always stock La Tromba oil for maintaining the bore of your instrument. This oil significantly reduces the risk of cracks in the wood, especially when playing-in new instruments, or in very dry climates. We also carry the highly effective and superior quality Solingen liquid, which is ideal for troubleshooting, and for maintaining and servicing the mechanism of your instrument.

We offer single stands for oboe or Cor anglais, as well as double stands in various combinations.

Slide calipers

We offer two types of slide caliper. The first is digital, and is recommended for its superior precision. It is critical to calibrate the final length of the reed to within +/- 0.25mm (a quarter of a millimetre) to obtain a perfectly balanced blank. Lack of precision affects the aperture and strength of your reeds.
The second type of caliper is more convenient for travel, being smaller and more compact.

First Reed-making Kits
